Gardening is great for the kids, it teaches them a love of nature and the environment. Hands-on fun in the garden can give children an understanding of where our fruit and veg come from and encourages them to try new foods and flavours. Gardening for kids: how to choose

Our kids' range starts at age 2. The pieces below are sized for small hands, and most can be wiped or washed clean after a muddy afternoon. Choose by what the child will actually do: dig, kneel, water or sow.

For digging

The Children's Hand Trowel and Children's Hand Fork are smaller versions of Burgon & Ball's classic tools, about 22 cm long, with a polished stainless steel head and an FSC-certified hardwood handle. Wipe them with a warm, soapy cloth after use and don't soak them.

For kneeling and keeping clean

The Kids Buzz Kneelo Kneeler measures 40 x 25 x 5 cm, with a memory foam layer over an EVA foam core and a waterproof neoprene cover you can wipe clean. The National Trust Kids Garden Apron is heavyweight cotton with a hedgehog design and a bib pocket. It fastens with hook-and-loop at the neck and waist and washes at 30°C. The page also suggests it for painting, crafts and baking.

For hands

The National Trust Kids Gardening Gloves, in frog and hedgehog designs, are one size fits most (19 x 8 cm), made from a polyester and elastane blend, and machine washable at 30°C.

For watering

The Bartley Burbler watering can holds 1.14 litres and is lightweight, with a removable fine-spray rose. Its product page describes it as suited to children learning to garden.

For sowing

The Sunflower Gift Card of Seeds is a greeting card with a packet of Sunbird sunflower seeds, a plant label and sowing instructions. Sow in spring or summer in full sun, about 10 mm deep. Pot and soil aren't included. The card is plastic-free and made from recycled materials, and you can add a personal message at checkout.
